Selecting the wrong cleanroom garment can undermine your entire contamination control investment. A garment that sheds fibres, generates static charge, or fails to cover the required body area will allow contaminants through that your HVAC system and SOPs cannot compensate for.
Match Garment Type to Your ISO Class
The primary criterion for garment selection is the ISO classification of your cleanroom. As a general guide:
- ISO Class 8 — non-sterile coverall or lab coat, hood, shoe covers, and gloves are typically sufficient
- ISO Class 7 — full coverall with raglan sleeves, hood, boot covers, and double gloves
- ISO Class 6 and below — sterile coveralls, often with integrated hood and boot, worn over a base layer
- ISO Class 5 (Grade A/B) — fully sterile gowning with validated sterility testing, typically Tyvek or equivalent
Understanding Garment Material Options
Standard Non-Woven (SMS / Polypropylene)
Spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS) non-woven fabric is the most common material for ISO Class 8 and general pharmaceutical environments. It is lightweight, breathable, and cost-effective for single-use applications. Virgin polypropylene variants produce very low fibre counts.
Tyvek (Flash-Spun HDPE)
DuPont Tyvek is a flash-spun high-density polyethylene fabric that offers superior particle barrier performance, chemical splash resistance, and antistatic properties (in Tyvek IsoClean variants). It is the material of choice for ISO Class 6 and above, and is commonly used in pharmaceutical aseptic areas and semiconductor facilities.
Antistatic (ESD) Garments
In semiconductor and electronics cleanrooms, static electricity is as damaging as particles. Antistatic garments incorporate conductive carbon-fibre threads woven into the fabric to dissipate electrostatic charge. These garments must be regularly tested to ensure their ESD properties are maintained through wash cycles.
Fit, Closure, and Coverage
A well-fitting garment is as important as the material. Key features to look for include:
- Raglan sleeve construction — eliminates the shoulder seam, reducing a potential particle-shedding point
- Elasticated wrists and ankles — prevents gaps at the glove and boot interface
- Front zip or press-stud closure — fully enclosing the torso without exposed seams
- Attached hood — for ISO Class 7 and above to control scalp particle shedding
- Sizing from XS to XXXXL — ensures proper fit across all personnel
Disposable vs Reusable Garments
Reusable garments require a validated laundry and sterilisation process, which adds cost and logistical complexity. For many facilities — particularly those with lower cleanroom class requirements or smaller personnel numbers — disposable single-use coveralls offer a lower total cost of ownership without the risk of laundry-process variation introducing contamination.
Vaishnavi Trading supplies cleanroom garments in standard non-woven and Tyvek variants, available in antistatic, antimicrobial, and sterile configurations, in sizes XS to XXXXL. Contact us for a bulk quotation.
